Indymedia is an international network with hundreds of groups from the 5 continents. The first independent centre opened up in Seattle (USA); the aim; that of providing “grassroot journalism” on protests held against the 1999 World Trade Organsiation meetings. Since then, hundreds of towns and countries, including Malta, have joined the network.

International news are published on the international website www.indymedia.org while local news are published on the local website. In our case, Malta’s website is malta.indymedia.org.

The most important principle governing Indymedia is its independence, having no connection with any political party or organisation, or company/ agency. This policy ensured that any news or information it publishes is free of political interest. Another important rule valued by Indymedia is “open publishing” by which every individual is free to write articles and send in comments.

Indymedia Malta is currently undergoing a fervent phase of restructuring to improve the level of its site. We considered it necessary to change the server to guarantee anonymity and security from external authorities. Basically we have worked to safeguard writers from showing their identity.
