Concern regarding the visit of a senior NATO officer
Moviment Graffitti is hereby raising some questions related to the visit in Malta of a senior military officer from NATO. Admiral Giampaolo di Paola is currently in Malta, where he will give a lecture at University and where he will meet the Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Moviment Graffitti states: “This visit from a high ranking NATO officer, and his meetings with the highest positions within the Maltese state, inevitably raises concerns about the relations between Malta and NATO. This is being said also in the light of other facts which indicate that Malta is getting closer to this military alliance. In 2008 Malta started to make part of the NATO project Partnership for Peace and during the last few years it welcomed many warships which, in their absolute majority, came from NATO countries.”
Moviment Graffitti states also: “We believe that military forces such as that of NATO produce a militarized world and hinder efforts for peace. NATO’s reason-for-being is that to protect the interest of particular countries and to guarantee their dominant position in the international scene. NATO was involved in violent conflicts such as that of Kosovo, and is presently engaged in the war in Afghanistan; all conflicts that took the lives of thousands of innocent persons. Furthermore, NATO permits the use of nuclear weapons in its operations.”
