FAA applauds Heritage Malta temple rescue

in

The fate of lesser known prehistoric temples at Mgarr, not far from the Skorba Temples, is looking more positive ever since a move by Heritage Malta to buy up surrounding unbuilt land. This site was granted a permit to build structures that would visually encroach on the temples.
Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) has praised the initiative taken by the heritage organisation to ward off encroaching development around the sensitive ancient site.
“While certainly a positive development, this is also something of a desperate and costly solution, especially as once this highly irregular permit was issued, Heritage Malta had to compensate the landowners at commercial rates” pointed out Astrid Vella of FAA.

Reasons to reject Sliema complex

in

Michael Briguglio, Alternattiva Demokratika, local councillor, Sliema
With reference to the news item Plans For New Residential Complex In Sliema (March 16), I am pleased to announce that both Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party and the Sliema local council have respectively written to Mepa to object against the proposed development at Villa Bonici (PA 6239/08).
This development, which is split into about 23 blocks of apartments, some rising as high as 12 floors, shall take place on one of Sliema's last remaining green lungs in an already congested area. There are major concerns about its effect on the quality of life of Sliema residents, who hoped that this place would be used as an open space which can enhance community life, and not overdevelopment which will further add to problems such as pollution and traffic congestion.

Destruction in Bahrija

in

Destruction Nature trust concerns on Bahrija development. Last month Nature Trust (Malta) expressed its concerns to MEPA for development taking place in a protected Natura 2000 site within the valley of Baħrija. The NGO is worried about the integrity of the site as the site of development lies just a few metres away from one of the most important freshwater courses of the island and it calls upon MEPA to ensure that this sensitive habitat has not, and will not be, degraded by the rehabilitation of the dwelling which permit was granted by the authority itself. Nature Trust, together with other NGOs has repeatedly called upon the authorities to protect the area and halt further degradation.

In Solidarity with Dr Patrick Attard PR: Moviment Graffitti

in

Moviment Graffitti is hereby expressing its full solidarity with Dr. Patrick Attard who in these last days had his employment contract with the Malta Resources Authority terminated following his expression on the blog of the Times. This comment which was made within the contest of the criticism posed by the Gozo bishop on the Nadur carnival events sustained that this same bishop has faltered from expressing himself against the development of the Nadur cemetery which related substantial environmental damage and negative impact on local farmers. The Malta Resources Authority sustained that the termination of this employment contract took place as a result of a breach of professional secrecy; however the comment made by Dr. Attard did not relate any information on the case which was not already within the public domain.

Bye bye Guantanamo

Obama is to be applauded for putting the closure of Guantanamo detention center as a main priority in his initial term as president What I cannot and will never agree to is that Europe has to clean up after the USA. "We're the new Guantanamo Bay if they move to Indiana and what does that mean for us?" said Republican state Senator Marlin Stutzman, who wants detainees kept away from the prison in Terre Haute, site of the federal execution chamber.

Migrants Solidarity Movement Launched

in

Press Conference The decision to create this organisation was taken as we saw that the debate and policy surrounding immigration issues in Malta leave a lot to be desired, with the emphasis being always on the problems that immigration poses. This is creating an atmosphere of panic amongst the Maltese public and hostility towards immigrants is on the rise; factors which can potentially lead to the exclusion of immigrants living in Malta.
